Dayve Hawk -- the tireless and prolific force behind Memory Tapes -- mentioned recently that with the majority of his remixes, he doesn't even bother listening to the original song, and I'm guessing that may be the case here. By focusing on Yeasayer's simple yet empowering "stick up for yourself son" refrain/mantra, Hawk turns the group's ode to the great Joe Louis into a swirling, uplifting jam fit for the dancefloor.

Mental Groove is releasing Sun Araw's extremely limited new Geneva Hits cassette, featuring live versions of "Heavy Deeds," "Horsesteppin," and a cover of Neil Young's "Barstool Blues," recorded @ l'Usine in Geneva over the summer. Listen to the tape here; only 50 copies worldwide though, so chances are it'll be gone before you get over there, or you may be able to score a copy at one of Sun Araw's upcoming shows for $5. We briefly mentioned this highly anticipated split 7" (due soon on Fat Possum) from two of 2k9's best young bands about a month back, and this morning the great Transparent hooked up the mp3 for "Super Ball," the stellar contribution from Memphis' Magic Kids. Jack Shankly calls the Kids "heaven’s house big band," and this soaring, lovelorn jam will fit perfectly alongside the S-Dubz' lo-fi glam teen dream (song-of-the-year contender) on the flip:

Soundway Records, purveyors of the incredible Nigeria Special reissue comp from 2007, are back with Ghana Special, an equally adventurous and vibrant collection of funky/soulful Ghana Soundz from the late 60's all the way up through the early '80s. Tough to pick just one highlight, although Honny & the Bees' perfect lilting afro-psych jam "Sisi Mbon" has been on repeat all morning, and is probably as good a place as any to start:

Here's the latest remix from Fred Falke, whom you may recall from his club-ready version of Grizzly Bear's "Two Weeks." At just over 8 minutes long, Falke 's remix is actually a condensed version of MGM's already danceable Xanadu-esque '70s pop epic, "Warm in the Shadows." The band's "Kamer Maza" says:

"Fred's version leans more towards those major chords... I'm not sure how those kind of changes affect the story. It seems to draw more attention to the choruses, and make them seem more like catharsis than resignation..."

this weekend: FUN FUN FUN fest '09

The 2009 Fun Fun Fun Fest and related festivities go down this weekend in downtown Austin's Waterloo Park. This year's lineup is by far the young fest's best yet: headliner-ish acts the Pharcyde, GZA, Danzig, Kid Sis, D.R.I., Destroyer, the Jesus Lizard, Of Montreal, and the Cool Kids are reason enough to attend, but here's a sampling of other acts we're psyched to see, in no particular order. Peruse the full lineup + schedule here, and avoid long lines/sold-out festivals by getting tickets in advance here.
