new Kria Brekkan

kria brekkan in a tree. in her underwear.

Wildering is the vinyl-only 7" solo debut of former múm siren Kria Brekkan. Last year's collaboration with husband Avey Tare was met with decidedly mixed reviews, and I have a feeling this one will elicit similar feelings. To call the bizarre and spooky title track "lo-fi" would be a huge understatement; it sounds like Kria utilized the same recording techniques they were using in 1860, only underwater. Still, there's something hauntingly sweet and otherworldly about b-side lullabye "gömul vísa um vorið" that's compelled me to keep it on repeat for much of the evening:

mp3:
Kria Brekkan :: gömul vísa um vorið

That voice...maybe you have to be in the right mood, and I guess I am. Buy the 7-inch here, while it lasts. Here's a clip of Kria performing another brand new song called "Ravine" -- which was inspired by a recent trip to Japan with her husband -- live for East Village Radio a few days ago:

au contraire

"The band's exciting, experimental synth-pop borrows liberally from French chanson, turbo-charging it with lush psychedelia, soul, swooning ambience and noise."--The National Post on Pas Chic Chic's Au Contraire

au contraire

I've spoken favorably of Montreal's Pas Chic Chic in the past, and lately I've been enamored with their debut LP, Au Contraire, a swirling, experimental take on '60s French pop. There's a lot going on here -- the band draws from a variety of influences, from '90s shoegaze to Tropicalia to Gainsbourg -- so it can be slightly daunting upon first listen. But repeat spins reveal an adventurous and dramatic (and extremely French) record that puts the band on par with some of their more famous Montreal homies (Malajube, Arcade Fire, and the like). This song, in particular, is especially awesome:

music from the forest

For the latest installment of the Stones Throw podcast, James Pants put together this mixtape while "holed up somewhere up in a strange forest in north Washington state" (thus the title). The guy has impeccable taste, as evidenced by his inclusion of classics from Gainsbourg, Moroder, De La Soul, Kraftwerk, Too Short, Silver Apples, the Seeds, and more, all in one stylish and seamless 33-minute trip. Likely the best thing you'll hear all day.

We've seen Lykke Li perform this song about 4 different ways now: in a bathroom, with some of her famous Swedish friends, with a bunch of old people and some female bodybuilders in the official version, and of course, I saw her play it live at one of our SXSW parties. Here's number five, courtesy of London's Black Cab Sessions. Basically, it never gets old.

Let's end the week with two of my favorite things: White Denim + Daytrotter. The band stopped by the Rock Island studios recently for a session, which included unreleased live favorites "Heart Attack" and "Migration Wind," as well as RCRD LBL EP jam "Paint Silver Gold", and one of the best songs the band has ever written, "Don't Look That Way At It." pocahaunted

I've always been pretty intrigued by LA's Pocahaunted, aka the (possibly self-proclaimed) "Olsen Twins of blissed out drone." But the prolific duo's new record Island Diamonds is far and away the most insane thing they've ever done. Made up of four epic grimy/dubby tribal drones that are currently threatening to explode my subwoofer, this record is entirely massive and daunting, a little scary, and totally badass. Every jam on the LP clocks in at around 8 minutes long; here's a nearly 4-minute excerpt of one of the standouts, taken from the band's myspace page.

african scream contest

Seems like every one of these African soul/psych comps I come across is better than the last, and this awesomely-titled collection of '70s High Life/soul/funk/psychedelia from West African nations Benin and Togo (presented by the great Analog Africa) raises the bar one more time. The whole thing is pretty exciting, but my jam is this soul burner from Gabo Brown and the incredible Orchestre Poly-Rhythmo (click that).

let's groove tonight

rio en medio

Danielle Stech-Homsy -- aka Rio En Medio -- has worked with such luminaries (relatively speaking) as Devendra Banhart, CocoRosie, and Grizzly Bear's Chris Taylor. When I talked about her last record over a year ago, I'm pretty sure I used words like "otherworldly" and "ghostly." So her next logical step would obviously be a 7" featuring covers of two iconic disco anthems from the late '70s/early '80s. She does right by this one, though, turning Earth Wind & Fire's ubiquitous white people wedding jam into an oddly enjoyable acapella disco-folk novelty:

stephen malkmus & the jicks: live at the granada theater

Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks rolled through Dallas last night, stopping to play a show at the Granada Theater along the way. In addition to being total NBA obsessives/savants (although I did take 2 bucks from their drummer on a Skip to My Lou bet), the band was in fine form, and treated the crowd to an exceptionally dirty set, highlighted by Malkmus' guitar wizardry and ex-Sleater-Kinney drummer Janet Weiss' propulsive beats and elegant harmonies. part of 2008 ACL Lineup revealed...

the raconteurs @ ACL '06

...via a Car Stereo (Wars) mashup featuring 29 of the confirmed acts. Some of the artists I could pick out on first listen include Hot Chip, CSS, Del the Funkee Homosapien, N.E.R.D, the Raconteurs, Jamie Lidell, and Gnarls Barkley. Take a listen and see who else you can decipher:

Not a bad start. There's some overlap with the Lolla lineup, which was made official today.

soul messages

Thanks to our friend AD for sending over the latest from the world's greatest archivists of amazing, impossibly obscure soul, Numero Group. Apparently, in the mid-'70s a bunch of dudes from Detroit and Chicago moved to Dimona, Israel, to get in touch with their Black Hebrew culture, and somewhere along the way, created this collection of blistering soul and funk jams laced with a touch of "gospel psychedelia." With song titles like "Burn Devil Burn" and "Junky Baby," it's all as good as you might imagine (if you're into the other uniformly sick Numero Group comps), but the tracks from the kids in Tonistics are my shit. Kind of like the Jackson 5, if instead singing about girls all the time, they were concerned with the devil and the path to spiritual enlightenment:

Soul Messages from Dimona is out May 1st on Numero Group. Recommended, obviously.

chicago sun-times leaks lollapalooza lineup

On the heels of the announcement that Grizzly Bear will open for Radiohead on the second leg of their North American tour comes the news that both bands will be playing Lollapalooza '08. Assuming DeRogatis' post is legit, the lineup is pretty impressive so far: Radiohead and Grizzly Bear will be joined by Wilco, Kanye, Broken Social Scene, Malkmus, Jamie Lidell, Cat Power, the Black Keys, the Cool Kids, Kid Sis, and more, with the full lineup coming on Monday.

ersen

Finders Keepers Records returns to form with this incredible record from Stones Throw's favorite '70s Anatolian psych-funk superstar, Ersen. This is on par with some of the releases that made me fall in love with Finders Keepers in the first place (namely, Susan Christie, Selda, and Jean-Claude Vannier). As Madlib's little bro Oh No puts it, "Yo Ersen music is ridiculous dope!!!! I'd love to flip this!!!!!" Please do.

Ersen is officially out April 11, but you can buy it now from Finders Keepers.

divine

We've spoken a few times about Sebastien Tellier's Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo-produced Sexuality LP -- still the frontrunner for best/worst album art of the year -- and although we already suspected it, this video for new single "Divine" confirms that the guy is a total weirdo:

buffalo

Since posting about it last week, I've been (figuratively) wearing the hell out of that Quiet Village record (as in, it's all I really want to listen to). I'm still not sure how you'd classify it, but those dudes utilized a dizzying array of obscure and awesome samples from all over the place in putting together the epic Silent Movie LP. My current favorite song on the record is "Gold Rush," which samples this badass jam from little-known '60s Scottish prog-rockers Writing on the Wall.
