dum dum girls

Remember that girls post from the other day? A number of commenters/emailers pointed out that L.A.'s Dum Dum Girls were a glaring oversight on my part, and after spending quite a bit of time listening to the tracks on their myspace page (please check out the extremely awesome soaring harmonies on "jail la la"), I'm going to have to agree. These girls are actually just one girl: a librarian/Talk Talk fan named Dee Dee, whose "blissed out buzzsaw" is drawing some favorable obvious comparisons, on the strength of some fuzzy reverb-laden guitars and incredibly infectious melodies. This track, taken from the group's sold-out debut EP, has been on repeat all morning:

Dum Dum Girls have a number of releases coming soon, including the 7" pictured above, which can be had by joining the excellent Hozac Records singles club. She's also slated to play a show in May at the Smell with Nite Jewel.

season dreaming

Check this post on Kanye's blog, entitled "SOME DOPE SHIT FOR MY APARTMENT," in which Kanye gets psyched about our Collected Animals/IM bros from Florida, Blind Man's Colour. The duo is currently unsigned, but with the combination of their dreamy underwater (warm, shallow water though, like a coral reef) soundscapes and Yeezy's endorsement, this might not be the case for long. Below, the opening track from BMC's unreleased full-length Season Dreaming, and a really nice clip for an unfinished ambient jam.

you were in my dreams tonight

From Murrieta, California's Ancient Crux (via No Pain in Pop) comes one of my favorite things I've heard so far this young year. Family Time Records says of Ancient Crux's new Interracial Coupling EP: "...at times it may seem pop, in the way roy orbison did pop, at other times simultaneously dreamy and warm..." Or, in the case of "In Teen Dreams," it's all of those things at once:

Ancient Crux's Interracial Coupling EP is out now on Family Time. $6 / limited to 150 copies.

We've been waiting for the last couple days for Animal Collective's latest BBC Session recording to surface, and IGIF has a couple tracks from the session up now. Although I'm not sure what other songs they played, this is the one we were hoping for (in case you missed the brief mention the other day, here's the vocal sample). Stuart Maconie calls it "What Would I Want Sky," so we'll assume that's the official title:

there's a light

shirley ann lee

No idea how Numero Group continues to dig up this kind of gold on such a consistent basis, but the upcoming Downriver Revival comp -- the first installment in the label's new "Local Customs" series -- is one of their deepest and best hauls yet. The record features some of the sounds that were coming out of the basement of Ecorse, Michigan's Felton Williams between 1967 and 1981. Read about the history of Williams' various labels while you take a listen to one of four powerful Shirley Ann Lee joints from the record, the starkly soulful "There's a Light." From the comp's amazingly detailed and exhaustive liner notes:
"The strongest of Lee's three Revival singles finds her at a crossroad of genres. Co-written with her truck-driving husband James after a haul through southern Michigan at dawn, "There's a Light" straddles gospel and rockabilly..."

Downriver Revival is out March 3, and includes an incredible DVD with over 200 archival sound recordings. Read more/buy here. Also recommended: this short and sweet clip documents Shirley Ann Lee's first listen to her own recordings in nearly 40 years. Here's a home recording from Ms. Lee that doesn't appear on the comp, via the Numero Group blog:

(photo by j. caldwell // more)

Okay, last AC post for at least the next 24 hours (probably): nyctaper captured a recording of the band's intimate Bowery Ballroom show the other night, calling it "the best unofficial live recording of Animal Collective that you will ever hear." Turns out the vocal sample in the new song they've been playing (which may or may not be tenatively titled "What Would I Want Sky") is taken from the Grateful Dead's "Unbroken Chain."

_____ girls

"Girls" are clearly in line to be the new black/wolf/f**k/crystals for 09. So far we've got Vivian Girls, U.S. Girls, "My Girls," and just Girls (not to mention Women), and now, riding the dirty wave of ultra lo-fi yet extremely melodic/endlessly hummable noise-pop that seems to be building right now comes Toronto's Little Girls and TX's own Fungi Girls.

Fungi Girls' upcoming 12"

We first heard about Fungi Girls from local blog We Shot J.R., and the band has since garnered its share of glowing national attention. Not bad for a couple of 14 & 15 year old kids from Cleburne. With repeat listens, the band's obvious knack for melody rises above their nearly impenetrable layer(s) of fuzz and blown out guitar/drums. Also, possibly the only group on myspace to list WAVVES as an influence:

mp3:
fungi girls :: crystal roads

The band has a few assorted releases coming soon, including a split on Not Not Fun.

********************

The only thing I know about Toronto's Little Girls (aside from the fact that they have 3 promising songs up here) is that sometimes dropping a link to your 2-day-old myspace page in our comment section can result in having one of your songs given away for free right here on the blog:

new music go music :: "warm in the shadows"

Another track from Music Go Music that sounds like it could've come from Olivia Newton John and ELO's Xanadu soundtrack. From Secretly Canadian:

"'Warm in the Shadows' is dance music, as envisioned by a group with a greater allegiance to pop archetypes than to the hymns of the dance-floor. It's a step in a different direction; an invitation to shake, coupled with a gentle evocation of the pain of wrecked love..."

the golden filter x peter bjorn and john

To be honest, I could take or leave most of Peter, Bjorn, and John's post-Writer's Block output, including the instrumental thing they did, and the first couple of tracks I've heard from the new LP. But a couple of stellar remixes have surfaced in the last couple of days that warrant your attention: a "dark weird tribal disco mix" (his words) from London's Friend, and an official re-work of the band's new single from the mysterious Golden Filter (via P4k).

mp3:

The Golden Filter has also provided official remixes for Cut Copy and Empire of The Sun (coming soon). Look for Peter, Bjorn, and John and the Golden Filter at SXSW '09. Not sure about Friend.

new grizzly bear :: "deep blue sea"

dan rossen

Grizzly Bear recorded a new full-band version of "Deep Blue Sea," for the upcoming Dark Was the Night charity compilation, which features every indie band ever. I'll always be partial to the sparse, haunting version Dan Rossen premiered on our blog radio show back in early '07, but the subtle instrumentation the band adds here is a nice touch. Listen on myspace for the rest of the day, then it's gone until the comp comes out on February 16.

new animal collective :: "blue sky" (live)

You knew it wouldn't be long before we got some post-Merriweather Post Pavilion material out of Animal Collective. The band unveiled this new song (unofficial working title that is definitely not the actual title: "Blue Sky") during their show a few nights ago at KOKO London. This one's a relatively laid back, floating Avey jam, complete with heavenly looped vocals from Panda Bear, which lend the song a really beautiful ethereal quality. It starts out a little slow, but stick around, because the second half is really something. (via Collected Animals)

love everlasting

K Records recently sent over the stunning new 12" from Jeremy Jay, which is officially due out next week on the label. There's sort of an uncomfortable, almost melancholic nostalgia that haunts "Love Everlasting," which 20jfg already nailed in typically uncanny fashion (complete with John Maus and Johnny Jewel references), and which I imagine will be evident to anyone that grew up in the '80s. Jay definitely wants you to dance, but he also probably wants you to feel pretty bummed about it.

mp3:
jeremy jay :: love everlasting

Jeremy Jay has a lot going on in the coming months, including some dates in Europe with Deerhunter and a few shows at SXSW in March. The Love Everlasting 12" will be out January 20 on K Recs, with his new Slow Dance LP to follow on March 24.

real estate

Real Estate is Martin Courtney, Etienne Duguay (of Predator Vision), Alex Bleeker, and Matt Mondanile (aka Ducktails). Not unlike Ducktails, Real Estate makes vaguely tropical lo-fi beach pop that reinforces my disdain for winter. A little more straightforward/less droning than Ducktails' stuff, for sure, but just as warm and sunny. These two tracks appear on the band's upcoming self-titled, white vinyl 7", which is due out February 1 as the first release on Underwater Peoples:

animal collective rough trade mix

(photo)

If you pre-ordered your copy of Merriweather Post Pavilion from Rough Trade, you would've received a "strictly limited, rare and exclusive mix cd, mixed by animal collective just for rough traders," consisting of 8 uniformly awesome tracks that presumably influenced or inspired the band in some way. The eclectic mix features selections from two of my top 3 records of '08 -- Erykah Badu's heartfelt J Dilla tribute "Telephone," and Grouper's "Stuck" -- along with a handful of jams I was mostly unfamiliar with, including a tight new(ish) track from dubstep luminary Kode 9, and a song from Osamu Kitajima's amazing, out-of-print 1971 album (released under the decidedly Anglo-sounding pseudonym Justin Heathcliff), which was only released in Japan and is definitely worth seeking out.

your love / my girls

Thanks to xxxchange for the tip on this one; I'd read elsewhere that Animal Collective's "My Girls" -- which is my current favorite song on MPP -- was likely something of an homage to Frankie Knuckles' Chicago house classic "Your Love," and this pretty much confirms that. tonight :: mpp release party

As I mentioned last month, we're teaming up with Radio UTD and Domino Records to present the official Dallas release party for Animal Collective's Merriweather Post Pavilion tonight at 7 PM at the Cavern. This is your chance to hear what 9.6 / P4k's album of '09 sounds like, assuming you've abstained from downloading the leak. And, there will be giveaways. Free.

blog radio :: most likely to succeed 2K9

For today's special edition of Blog Radio, Sirius asked us to count down the top 5 artists that we think are most likely to succeed in 2009. Of course, success is a relative term, so my list is essentially just the artists I look forward to hearing new material from/want to see live/expect breakout years from in '09. The Hipster Runoff radio program kicks things off at 5 PM EST on Sirius XMU, and you can hear my show shortly after that (shows will also be rebroadcast on Saturday and Sunday). There are obviously tons of artists that didn't make the list because of time constraints, but you can see my top 5 and a few honorable mentions after the jump...

5. Ariel Pink's Haunted Grafitti :: can't hear my eyes
4. Girls :: hellhole ratrace
3. Harlem :: south of france
2. WAVVES :: weed demon
1. SALEM :: sweat

Honorable Mentions:

The Golden Filter :: solid gold
Weird Tapes :: home
CFCF :: cassie x lil' wayne :: official girl (CFCF remix)
Fan Death :: veronica's veil
Alela Diane :: white as diamonds
