mp3: SALEM x Gucci Mane

SALEM laces Gucci Mane's trap-hop flow with their demented electro-goth-juke, and the result is unsettling and awesome (check Heather's haunting vox on "Bird Flu"). Gucci needs to tap these guys to produce his next record:

alela & alina

alina/alela

The tremendously underrated (not in France though, she's huge there) Alela Diane is accompanied by Alina Hardin on this cover of old traditional folk ballad "Bowling Green," taken from their forthcoming limited Alela & Alina 10" tour EP, out next week on Rough Trade.

The Alela & Alina 10" is out October 6, and is limited to fewer than 1000 copies. As I mentioned last week, we're co-presenting Alela's upcoming show with Marissa Nadler + Bosque Brown at the Fort Worth Modern.

phoenix x devendra banhart

Possibly the best of the countless Phoenix remixes to emerge this year, and definitely the best thing Devendra has done in a while. Dev says:
"We LOVE and have LOVED Phoenix since Alphabetical, and have wanted to do more than just ogle at their awesomeness for quite some time. With the release of their luminary Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix we got the chance to un-floccinaucinihilipilificate our dreams and with awesome, oceanic glee, we took Rome for a ride…"

"i have a broken wrist. i'm obviously not trying to fight fools. that dude was running at me trying to fight so I defended myself. there was a bar full of people that saw it. I was just trying to have fun and hang out with my friends. this shit is so stupid...again, dude had it coming."

mp3: binki shapiro & friends | kids song

binki shapiro

Thanks to Dallas Clayton for sending over this sweet and tender little lullaby, featuring Binki Shapiro of Little Joy fame, Jason Boesel of Rilo Kiley/the Mystic Valley Band, and others, inspired by Dr. Seuss' “Did I Ever Tell You How Lucky You Are?” Dallas says:
"A few years ago I was putting together a small kids album for my son and I asked a bunch of my friends to record some songs. As tends to happen I got about half way through before being taken away by more pressing projects. The other day I unearthed this track, which I thought might be nice to share with the world..."
mp3:
binki shapiro & friends :: kids song

Related: check the excellent/insightful We Love You So, a blog that Dallas and Spike Jonze started to "help shed some light on many of the small influences that have converged" to make Where The Wild Things Are happen (also, this song could/should totally be on the film's soundtrack).

don't lie

I'm a bit surprised at how little attention the great new debut LP from San Francisco's the Mantles has received of late (aside from some message board props and the occasional breathless, spot-on blog post). The band makes hazy, vaguely psychedelic, and consistently awesome garage pop that recalls the Chills and other assorted '80s Dunedin Sound disciples. Here's the original version of album standout "Don't Lie;" The Mantles is out now Siltbreeze.

N/A

Thanks to various sources for turning me on to this noisy/exuberant lo-fi schoolyard chant, taken from the debut full-length from Seattle's Naomi Punk. "N/A" is the closing track on the new record, and while it's not exactly representative of the rest of the work on the album (which is also very good), it's likely the most vibrant and infectiously uplifting thing you'll hear all day. Naomi Punk tells us:
"...it is a song performed by Rwandan children in a town/village in Rwanda, and was recorded by my mom (she grew up in Nigeria and works in Africa on and off), and was subjected to some gentle found-sound manipulation on my part..."

concentrate

Stones Throw has just released Ethiopium, the highly anticipated follow-up to Oh No's underrated 2007 Anatolian psych-funk excursion, Dr. No's Oxperiment. This time out, Oh No mines Egon's awe-inspiring and seemingly endless trove of "rare 60s and 70s Ethiopian funk, jazz, folk, soul and psychedelic rock" to create another adventurous/educational collection of dusty, mostly laid-back beats that the label recommends pairing with some Ethiopium coffee and your freshest local greenery. Highly recommended; get it here.

beach house signs to sub pop

Can't wait for their third full-length....the new stuff we've heard from the band has been nothing short of amazing.

"In July the band took a break from touring to head to upstate New York to record with Chris Coady at Dreamland Studios in Woodstock. They spent a solid month in solitude writing and recording in the church-converted-to-studio compound. What they emerged with is their greatest work to date! Beach House’s third album will be released on Sub Pop (and on Bella Union overseas) in early 2010..."
