We told you about this one the other day, and now TLOBF comes through with the mp3, along with this choice quote from Air France: "This is the answer to our prayers. ‘Spring’ is the song we fucked to when we were eleven and took rohypnol raw”. Alright. Download it here:

it was an ocean from me to you

Not sure if this song, which Dee Dee dedicates to Reading Rainbow, is an unreleased Dum Dum Girls jam (or a cover maybe?) or what, but it sounds like Nico-era-Velvets meets early '60s girl group innocence/harmonies, and it's amazing. Hopefully we'll get a studio version of this on the group's Sub Pop debut. Via the Great Pumpkin. Hit up their site to check out more clips from the show.

mp3: new nite jewel | "we want our things"

L.A.'s Nite Jewel can probably be considered something of a dreambeat/hypnagogic-pop pioneer at this point (she was around all the way back in 2008), but this track from her new You F O European-only tour CD-r is a little darker and more along the lines of how the '80s actually sounded, as opposed to a chillwavier hazy-borrowed-nostalgia-via-warped-cassette version of how the '80s sounded. The whole EP is great (also features NJ's last single "Falling Far") and worth tracking down if you happen to be in Europe, or maybe Ramona will still have some spare copies on her upcoming dates with Neon Indian. how to make ambient sadcake

the sandwitches

The Sandwitches is the new project from Heidi Alexander + Grace Cooper, both formerly of like-minded SF band the Fresh & Onlys. The group's new record How to Make Ambient Sadcake (out now on new SF label Turn Up) has been described as "what it would sound like for a band on Woodsist to cover Fleetwood Mac's...Tusk" and also "a Holy Communion of Roky Erickson and Stevie Nicks." The band does cover a lot of ground, stylistically -- from bluesy, lo-fi garage-country to Moon Pix-era Cat Power (see "Kiss Your Feet") to soulful, throwback girl-group sock hop jams -- but there's an easy cohesiveness to it all, and an earnest, unaffected sweetness that seems to be a common thread in all of their infectiously heartfelt songs. All highly recommended; get the LP here, and look out for a few 7"s in the near future.

two to make a pair

Now Again/Stones Throw just released a compilation of essential "beat-heavy global psychedelia" from the late '60s/early '70s, entitled Forge Your Own Chains. One standout jam is the fuzzed out afro-funk of the Strangers' "Two To Make a Pair." Now Again calls the track "a winning example of the sound that leapt out of East Nigeria after the January 1970 armistice in the Nigerian Civil War."

the rangers | "deerfield village"

New track from San Francisco-via-Dallas "elevator psyche" dude Rangers, sent over by Olde English Spelling Bee, who will be releasing Rangers' Suburban Tours LP later this year. "Deerfield Village" is my favorite thing he's done so far, and fans of Ariel Pink, '70s educational filmstrips, and the current crew of 'hypnagogic pop'/chillfiwavedreambeatcore bands will surely dig his hazy, dream-like nostalgia (real, not borrowed, I think). Good stuff:

arthur russell | "come to life"

Take a listen to the gorgeous previously unreleased Arthur Russell track that appears on the limited CANT (Chris Taylor of Grizzly Bear) split single we mentioned a couple weeks back. Recorded by Russell in the late '70s, and featuring perfectly complementary backing vocals from an unidentified chanteuse, "Come to Life" would've fit nicely (and was originally slated to appear) on last year's Love Is Overtaking Me:

the bitters | "EAST"

Great new jam from Ben Cook + Aerin Fogel, aka "cave pop stars of the future" the Bitters, taken from their new EAST 7", out now on Captured Tracks: The dank and 'doomy' a-side is slightly unhinged but also super infectious, which is about par for the course for these two. The band tells me a redone version of this song will appear on their upcoming debut LP, East General, which should see release in early Spring of next year on Woodsist.

This started as a festive little Halloween mix in which I compiled some seasonal sounds that I felt were eerie and haunting, but the end result turned out kind of bleak and nightmarish. bad design

Slumberland just released a new limited 7" from San Francisco's the Mantles, featuring two exclusive new songs not available on the band's awesome self-titled LP (out now on Siltbreeze). Here's the a-side, which the label says "has the lazy drive of a 'tougher' Bats -- hungover with a shot voice and a negative attitude." But like the group's other undeniable single, it somehow manages to feel almost anthemic in its hazy simplicity. The Bad Design 7" is limited to 300 copies on "all swirly color vinyl." Get it here.

autumn brought you to me

We still don't know too much about starry-eyed Swedes Summer Camp, but we're into everything they've done so far, and the group was nice enough to send over this new gem for us to premiere. The lilting "Ghost Train" glows with the same hopelessly romantic longing that we heard on this irresistible cover and their own sweet jam "Why Don't You Stay," all classic/nostalgic '50s girl group vibes submerged in a tidepool of modern indie-pop:

new arcade fire? possibly

The website for the forthcoming Arcade Fire-scored (well, Win, Regine, and Owen) Richard Kelly film, The Box, is now live here. Click past the trailer to hear a pretty dark and haunting snippet that definitely sounds like them. Kelly describes the score:

“Its kind of like [‘Psycho’ composer] Bernard Herman on acid, what they did,” says Kelly. “It’s very lush, and kind of a very bombastic, emotional score. And kind of Hitchcock. It feels like a score from the 1970s."

dog song

Chocolate Bobka introduced us to Vermont's Mountain Man a month or so back, but it was CB's more recent post -- specifically, the amazing 3-part harmonies on the strikingly intimate "Dog Song" -- that really floored me. Sure to appeal to fans of Joanna Newsom, Alela Diane, Marissa Nadler and the like, Mountain Man creates sounds that are at once stark, fragile, and sad, but there's a genuine warmth here that sets these songs apart and makes them perfect for what (almost) feels like the first night of Fall here in TX.
