no summer for you

SALEM prominently featured a couple of songs on their recent We Make It Good mix from un-Google-able San Francisco band oOoOO. Well oOoOO sent over a few tracks today -- including a couple from the WMIG mix, as well as a brand new "Winter jam" -- and it's obvious why SALEM are fans. Haunted, heavy electro-goth, with gorgeous icy vocals on "Nosummr4u" (a dark rendition of '80s club hit "Summertime Summertime") coming from someone called Miss Lisa:

new Reading Rainbow :: "restless"

Check the punchy new single from Philly boy/girl duo Reading Rainbow at the group's myspace page, which can be found by visiting www.myspace.com/levarmotherfuckingburton. RR's new 7", out now on San Diego's Zoo Music, features three new songs, including "Restless" and b-side "Stephanie Says," which I'm hoping is a Velvet Underground cover. Get it here.

EDIT: now with mp3!

neon indian remixes grizzly bear (twice)

It is common knowledge that Ed Droste has always secretly wanted to be a chillwave star, probably since before the genre was invented back in late 2009. He gets his chance here, courtesy of two Alan Palomo/Neon Indian remixes of Grizzly Bear's smash hit "Cheerleader." Listen to the "studio 6669" version below, and check the "Sega Genesis P-Orridge" rendition here.

mp3: grizzly bear remixes the notwist

Grizzly Bear offers up a rare remix for the Notwist's "Boneless," a song you may recall from the glorious, Brazda Brothers-sampling Panda Bear version from last year. Take a listen to GB's majestic, slightly less radical take on the song below, and download the mp3 for free here.

SXSW announces over 200 showcasing bands for 2010

Vermont's Mountain Man [photo]

SXSW '10 has announced its first big group of showcasing acts. Highlights after a cursory glance over the list include Harlem, Fergus & Geronimo, the Mantles, Mountain Man, Warpaint, and (theoretically) many, many more. Check the list here.

we make it good: SALEM

"Goth-juke" enigmas SALEM are the latest to contribute to We Make It Good's esteemed mix series. Their unrelentingly bleak 45-minute mix features a few SALEM tracks and a couple wtf chopped + screwed remixes of classics from Skeeter Davis and the Beach Boys, among other things. Here's what WMIG has to say about it:
"Pink socks, a dirty mattress, wallpaper peeling off the walls, empty cough syrup bottles, and soiled wall to wall carpeting all come to mind after repeated listens to this new Salem mix. It’s either the perfect accompaniment to the fall/winter blues or soundtrack to scrawling your name on your bedroom wall in blood, it’s up to you."

Panda Bear discusses new solo album, film

"The rhythms are really basic and kind of raw and simple and are electronic. It's not live instrumentation, I’ve been playing guitar but I feed it through the same thing that the sequences are on. It’s a very electronic sound and very voice heavy. A simple arrangement of drums, the guitar and singing. Really there are only two or three elements to every song. It’s pretty raw sounding for better for worse...The tone is a lot darker (than Person Pitch) and it sounds sort of dramatic or romantic to me. But I’m in still in the thick of the thing so it’s really tough to be objective at this point. So I have no idea, but hopefully people like it. I hope its good."

platoon

Cameron Stallones sent over this swampy, psychedelic scuzz-out from his non-Sun Araw/Pocahaunted project, Magic Lantern. The group's aptly-titled new full-length, PLATOON, should be here in a month or so, with Stallones promising "energetic moon-cone wipeouts" and "thigh-quaking sweatfests." This is definitely one of those (not sure which):

Probably the best thing you'll hear today, courtesy of Fact Magazine: a perfect, nearly hour-long new mix from London's King Midas Sound, made up of "influences on their twilight Lovers Rock sound." The mix features choice selections from Burial, Lovejoys, Little Dragon, Gregory Isaacs, My Bloody Valentine, and more, including a few from KMS' own full-length Waiting For You (out next week on Hyperdub). Here's a Sunday afternoon downer for you, courtesy of L.A. "lurk-jazz triad" Topaz Rags -- Amanda + Britt from Pocahaunted, with Ash Cunningham on piano -- which Not Not Fun describes as being "lost somewhere between Bohren & Der Club Of Gore and some half-destroyed pre-digital Portishead demo." The dirge-y and ominous "Sightings" appears on the group's haunting debut full-length Capricorn Born Again, which is limited to 400 copies on black vinyl, in beautiful jackets (pictured above) designed by Amanda. Thanks to our friends at Olde English Spelling Bee for sending over this exclusive outtake/curio from Ducktails' Landscapes sessions, on which Matthew Mondanile and Real Estate's Martin Courtney cover "Play in the Sun," by obscure cult psych-folk popsters Departmentstore Santas. mp3: new Beach House | "norway"

We've been in love with this song -- which Beach House penned on a train trip through the Norwegian mountains -- since we heard Victoria + Alex play a stripped-down version in an Oslo train station back in '08, and our love grew exponentially when we saw them play a stunning, more uptempo version of the song a handful of times at SXSW earlier this year. And yet, we still weren't quite prepared for this one, which is but one of a handful of instant classics on the group's near-perfect Sub Pop debut, Teen Dream (Ed Droste is right):

mp3 premiere: yeasayer | "ambling alp (memory tapes remix)"

Dayve Hawk -- the tireless and prolific force behind Memory Tapes -- mentioned recently that with the majority of his remixes, he doesn't even bother listening to the original song, and I'm guessing that may be the case here. By focusing on Yeasayer's simple yet empowering "stick up for yourself son" refrain/mantra, Hawk turns the group's ode to the great Joe Louis into a swirling, uplifting jam fit for the dancefloor.
