new Pearl Harbor 7" | Slivers of You / California Shakedown

L.A.'s Pearl Harbor have announced that their second official release, the forthcoming Slivers of You / California Shakedown 7" (pictured above), will be out soon in an edition of 300 on Japanese label Big Love (SALEM, the xx, Nite Jewel, Ariel Pink). The band has also announced a few SXSW shows, including a PPM showcase, a Waterloo in-store, and our thing with Mexican Summer.

soft metals

We've been enjoying these brand new icy late-night synth jams from Portland's Soft Metals (from the same scene that birthed Honey Owens' psych-house side-project Miracles Club) + Montreal's Gold Zebra. Dark and sexy retro-futuristic Italo-disco created on vintage analog synths and drum machines; both songs highly recommended for those growing impatient for new material from the Glass Candy/Chromatics crew:

mp3: Cibelle | "Lightworks"

We posted the video for Cibelle's tropicalia-psych-cabaret take on '50s exotica/electronic music OG Raymond Scott's "Lightworks" a few weeks back, and now she's hooked us up with the mp3. Check it below, along with the original and Dilla's classic version, and play all 3 at the same time for full psychedelic effect. Look for this on Sonja Lhalecallon's (Cibelle's post-apocalyptic alter-ego) forthcoming Las Venus Resort Palace Hotel, out April 12 on Crammed Discs.

you just have to run

Here's the b-side from Velvet Davenport's new 7", which finds the Minneapolis crew collaborating with latest 4AD signee Ariel Pink. "Run" is a sunny little '60s-leaning psych-pop gem that nicely complements the much-blogged A-side. Our only complaint is that, at less than a minute-and-a-half long, this one comes and goes way too soon. The Get Out / Run 7" is out March 31 on SHDWPLY.

listen to Have One On Me

Joanna Newsom's Have One on Me is finally out today, and NPR is offering a full album stream here. If the prospect of 3 LPs of new Newsom seems daunting, start with the incredible "Baby Birch" and the heartbreakingly intimate "Go Long" -- two of the album's defining tracks, both of which today's Pitchfork review inexplicably failed to mention -- or Newsom's perfect Joni-esque jaunt through Laurel Canyon, "Good Intentions Paving Company." Have One On Me is available on beautifully-packaged 3xLP here.

premiere: Primary 1 | "the blues (feat. nina persson)"

London's Primary 1 has been on our radar lately -- mostly thanks to a recent Memory Tapes remix and a nice collection of free demos -- and we were just sent this track from his forthcoming full-length, which is due sometime in the Fall. We're told the as-yet-untitled LP features collabs with Diplo, Gonzales, Zdar (who has produced Phoenix, Cut Copy, and the new Rapture album), and others, including this wistful and extremely catchy duet with Nina Persson of A Camp/the Cardigans, highlighted by some melancholy horns and Persson's familiar dreamy voice:

caveman smack

The enigmatic Dem Hunger (blog commenter of the decade) recently sent over his spaced-out, dizzyingly awesome debut record, Caveman Smack (due out February 23 on Leaving). The label describes it as "Madlib beats bubbling up from a oozing volcano, its Dilla ambience for a nuclear winter," but I'm partial to DH's own apt "description" of this thing:
"GUESS THE WHOLE IDEA IS SOME EARLY HUMAN JUST LAYIN AROUND WITH HIS EYES OUT OF HIS HEAD. ALL SKULL BASHED UP IN THE RIVER. THIS MUSIC SORT OF FLOATIN AROUND INSIDE HIS JAWBONE. THE BONES GET EATEN BY THE SUN, THEN IT ALL GETS SPAT BACK DOWN TO EARTH."

Mountain Man's transcendent unamplified live performances are slowly becoming the stuff of legend, and we're looking forward to experiencing that next month in person at SXSW. Shot and edited by Nate Chan:

cibelle :: "lightworks"

Cibelle's post-apocalyptic alter-ego Sonja Khalecallon takes on '50s exotica/electronic music pioneer Raymond Scott's "Lightworks" -- which you may know better as one of Dilla's classic Donuts -- live in a jungle at the "last cabaret on Earth." Look for this on Cibelle's forthcoming Las Venus Resort Palace Hotel, out this Spring on Crammed Discs.
